Gemona del Friuli (Udine), May 6 (LaPresse) – "Our country preserves remarkable moral resources of humanity and a sense of unity, which it knows how to express in the most difficult moments, a precious social and civic heritage. It happened in Friuli, and it had already happened elsewhere before. And this generous history has often reappeared." This was said by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on the occasion of the extraordinary regional council of Friuli Venezia Giulia in Gemona, in the province of Udine, marking 50 years since the Friuli earthquake of May 6, 1976.

"The inner strength of the Friulian people," he stressed, "met the extraordinary solidarity of all Italians. And the simultaneous presence today of the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister renews that feeling. First of all, in the very first hours after the most devastating shock, there was the generous mobilisation of army personnel and firefighters. The dedication of so many men in uniform and their efforts, spent down to the last drop of energy, saved lives, treated the injured, and helped instil trust and courage. A sense of fraternity also expressed by many young people who rushed to help in the villages and countryside of a territory most of them did not even know."
