Turin, 5 June (LaPresse) – Iran has stated that it will seek to impose service charges on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for guaranteeing the vessels’ safety, rather than tolls. Tehran ‘does not intend to collect passage fees, transit duties or payments for transit rights’, said Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi in an interview with the semi-official Iranian news agency Mehr. Iran, he added, will instead seek compensation for services provided alongside Oman, including navigation assistance, search and rescue, security and protection services, and environmental clean-up services in the event of pollution.
