New York (USA), 16 May (LaPresse) – Harvey Weinstein has, for now, avoided a new conviction in New York: the judge has declared the rape trial a mistrial after the jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict. The case concerned allegations made by Jessica Mann, who claims she was raped by Weinstein in a Manhattan hotel in 2013. The defence reiterated that the encounter was consensual. Despite the trial being declared a mistrial, Weinstein remains in prison for other convictions relating to sexual offences in the United States. Prosecutors will decide on 24 June whether to seek a fourth trial in New York. The case forms part of the legal proceedings stemming from allegations that emerged in 2017, which contributed to the rise of the #MeToo movement.
