Milan, May 4 (LaPresse) – Some changes with an Italian focus in the latest WTA world rankings published this morning following the conclusion of the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid, Spain, played on the clay courts of the Caja Mágica. Once again this week, there are still two Italian players in the top 100. Italy’s leading player remains Jasmine Paolini: the 30-year-old from Bagni di Lucca moves up one place, rising to 8th position. Behind her, Elisabetta Cocciaretto remains steady at number 41, the only other Italian in the top 100. Several changes – but no new entries – are to be noted in the world top ten. Aryna Sabalenka remains at the top for the 81st consecutive week (89th overall: she had already been there from 11 September to 5 November 2023): the 27-year-old from Minsk, eliminated in the Madrid quarterfinals by Baptiste (despite 6 match points), still holds a 1,555-point lead over Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina, second, who confirms her career-high ranking. On the third step of the podium, Poland’s Iga Swiatek rises, overtaking American Coco Gauff, who drops to fourth place. This is this week’s WTA top ten: 1. Sabalenka, Aryna (BLR) 10,110 (0), 2. Rybakina, Elena (KAZ) 8,555 (0), 3. Swiatek, Iga (POL) 6,948 points (+1), 4. Gauff, Coco (USA) 6,749 (-1), 5. Pegula, Jessica (USA) 6,136 (0), 6. Anisimova, Amanda (USA) 5,985 (0), 7.
