Madrid (Spain), 26 May (LaPresse) – "There is no greater disaster than war, especially when accompanied by hunger. Hunger has become ‘yet another weapon, far cheaper than missiles, and this is a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law that shows no sign of abating. In the last eight years alone, there have been over 20,000 attacks on markets, farmland and food distribution systems. This happens in many war zones, such as in Gaza, where some seek to win the war by starving a population into submission. These are the same people who, a week ago, humiliated and mistreated the participants in the Flotilla, whose sole aim was to deliver humanitarian aid.” This was stated by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in his address at the event ‘Food Security and Nutrition Under Pressure: Consequences of the Conflict in the Middle East’, held at the FAO headquarters in Rome. “With the same determination” with which we say no to war, “we say no to hunger”, “these wars, which are undoubtedly unjust, illegal and unnecessary, are generating global food crises on an unprecedented scale,” added the socialist leader.
