Milan, 23 May (LaPresse) – The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has announced that three volunteers from the Democratic Republic of the Congo Red Cross (DRC RC) have died after contracting the Ebola virus whilst on duty. The three were working in the Mongbwalu section, in the territory of Djugu, in Ituri province. The IFRC has identified them as Alikana Udumusi Augustin, Sezabo Katanabo and Ajiko Chandiru Viviane. "It is believed that they contracted the Ebola virus whilst on duty, during the handling of bodies on 27 March as part of a humanitarian mission unrelated to Ebola. At the time of the intervention, the community was unaware of the Ebola outbreak and the outbreak had not yet been identified. They are among the first known victims of the outbreak,” reported the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The dates of death of the three are as follows: Ajiko Chandiru Viviane on 5 May; Sezabo Katanabo on 15 May; and Alikana Udumusi Augustin on 16 May.
