Milan, 15 May (LaPresse/AP) – China has reiterated its call for the Strait of Hormuz to be reopened and has called for a diplomatic solution to the war in Iran. “Now that the door to dialogue has been opened, it should not be closed again,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement today, adding that the solution should “take into account the concerns of all parties regarding the Iranian nuclear issue”. “Maritime routes should be reopened as soon as possible,” the ministry said. Donald Trump has called for a scaling back of Iran’s nuclear programme as a condition for ending the war. The ministry did not specify whether China would help negotiate an end to the conflict, as Trump told Fox News’ Sean Hannity in an interview. Instead, the ministry promoted a four-point peace proposal by Xi, which is vague but mentions respect for national sovereignty and international law.
