Milan, 6 May (LaPresse) – “Israel must immediately and unconditionally release the members of the Global Sumud flotilla, Saif Abukeshek and Thiago de Avila, who were arrested in international waters and taken to Israel, where they remain in detention without charge.” This is stated in a press release from Geneva by the spokesperson for the UN Human Rights Office, Thameen Al-Kheetan. “It is not a crime to show solidarity and seek to deliver humanitarian aid to the Palestinian population of Gaza, who are in desperate need of it,” adds Al-Kheetan. “The disturbing accounts of serious ill-treatment suffered by Abukeshek and de Avila must be investigated and those responsible must be brought to justice. We call on Israel to end the use of arbitrary detention and the application of vaguely defined anti-terrorism legislation, which contravenes international human rights law. Israel must also end the blockade of Gaza and allow and facilitate the entry of sufficient humanitarian aid into the besieged Palestinian Strip,” the UN spokesperson concluded.
