Frankfurt (Germany), 4 May (LaPresse) – At least two people have died and others have been injured after a car travelling at high speed struck a group of pedestrians in the centre of Leipzig. “Two people have died,” announced Leipzig’s mayor, Burkhard Jung, as reported by Bild. According to initial police reports, the incident took place on Grimmaische Strasse, a shopping street linking Augustusplatz with the market square. Around ten ambulances are at the scene of the accident. Shops in the pedestrian zone have been closed and the area cordoned off. An eyewitness who works in one of the shops on the affected street told Focus online: “I’m still completely in shock. From inside the shop, I saw a car speeding past at full speed. Some people were hit. That’s all I saw; then the car disappeared from view. It was travelling at high speed; it was a large vehicle. Now the street is full of ambulances and police.” There are over a dozen ambulances at the scene. An emergency response team is also attending to the injured and those affected.
