Florence, 4 May (LaPresse) – Following the fire on Monte Faeta, which is still being brought under control, the President of Tuscany, Eugenio Giani, has decided to declare a regional state of emergency and then proceed to request a national state of disaster. The decree is already awaiting signature. The fire broke out on 28 April and the fire front, due to strong winds that complicated the response, was brought under control on 2 May. “More than seven hundred hectares of woodland have been devastated, in addition to necessitating the evacuation of thousands of residents,” emphasises Giani. “It was a fire of immense proportions, and we must quickly repair the damage and take action against the risks of hydrogeological instability on the slopes affected by the flames, by planting new trees.” Mount Faeta acts as a natural boundary between the provinces of Pisa and Lucca, and the areas affected by the fire are located within the municipalities of Lucca, Capannori and San Giuliano Terme. Over the past few days, more than nine hundred people have been deployed to tackle the fire, including seven hundred volunteers from the regional forest fire service.
