Milan, 3 May (LaPresse) – The Ashkelon Magistrates’ Court in Israel has extended the detention of the two activists, Thiago de Avila and Saif Abukeshek, from the Global Sumud Flotilla by two days, until Tuesday 5 May 2026. This was reported by the NGO Adalah, which is handling their legal defence. “This decision follows their illegal seizure by the Israeli Navy in international waters on 30 April,” states the NGO, referring to the Israeli Navy’s boarding of vessels in the flotilla in waters near the Greek island of Crete, whilst the Global Sumud Flotilla was sailing towards Gaza, and the subsequent arrests carried out by Israeli soldiers. Adalah emphasises that no formal charges have been brought against either of the two activists, who remain in the pre-indictment phase under interrogation and will be transferred back to the Shikma detention centre in Ashkelon, where they will remain in solitary confinement. “Both activists are continuing their hunger strike to protest against their illegal detention and the ill-treatment they have suffered,” the group states.
