Milan, 17 Apr. (LaPresse) – The Trump administration has abruptly cancelled an $11 million contract (approximately €9.3 million) with Catholic Charities, a Miami-based charity providing reception and assistance to unaccompanied foreign minors entering the United States. This was reported by the local newspaper “Miami Herald”. The cancellation brings to an end a relationship between the Catholic Church and the US government that dates back to the first arrivals of Cuban exiles in South Florida and comes amid growing tensions following Donald Trump’s criticism of the Pope. “The US government has abruptly decided to end over 60 years of collaboration with Catholic Charities in the Archdiocese of Miami,” said the Archbishop of Miami, Thomas Wenski. “The services provided by the Archdiocese of Miami to unaccompanied minors have been recognised for their excellence and have served as a model for other agencies across the country,” he added. According to Wenski, “Catholic Charities’ services will be forced to close within three months”.
