Naples, 6 June (LaPresse) – Julio Velasco’s Italy secured their third win in three matches in Week 1 of the Volleyball Nations League, currently taking place in Brasília. After defeating Bulgaria and the Netherlands, the Azzurre also overcame Daniele Santarelli’s Turkey 3-1 (25-16; 26-28; 25-19; 25-15), securing their 39th consecutive victory in official matches. Today at 7.30 pm Italian time, the final match of Week 1 takes place: Italy v Brazil at the Palasport Nilson Nelson, which is expected to be sold out and ready to spur the Brazilian hosts on to victory. “We won by showing character and playing well,” said Italy’s head coach Julio Velasco, “giving Manfredini and Antropova a rest as they needed a breather. We gave others the chance to get into the swing of things because we know that in this type of competition everyone needs to be ready. The standard is rising match by match: Bulgaria, the Netherlands, now Turkey – who, despite not being at full strength, remain a top-class side – and tomorrow we face Brazil, who are at full strength and are a very strong team. Overall, however, I’m very pleased with the performance, especially in blocking and defence – we did an excellent job. It’s very important because when the team defends well, it gives confidence to the attackers, who know they can play at ease even if they face a few too many blocks. Tomorrow will be another important test, but more than a test, it will be an opportunity, because playing against Brazil in Brazil is invaluable in terms of experience for this new squad."
