Milan, June 6 (LaPresse) – The expected outcome: Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva is the new Roland Garros champion (total prize money €61,723,000), the second Grand Slam event of the season, played on the Paris clay courts. In the final held on the Philippe Chatrier centre court, the pupil of Conchita Martínez (herself a former champion in Paris) defeated the tournament revelation, Polish player Maja Chwalińska, in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in 1 hour and 22 minutes, in a match affected by strong wind. For Andreeva, world No. 8 and eighth seed, this is her first Grand Slam title in her first final. She dominated the tournament, dropping only one set. The young Russian also moves to the top of the Race to Riyadh and rises to No. 6 in the WTA rankings. The fairytale run of 24-year-old Chwalińska ends in the final; she reached the decisive match starting from the qualifiers. The Polish player still climbs 100 places in the rankings, moving from No. 114 to No. 21 in the WTA standings.
