Turin, 26 May (LaPresse) – ‘As regards the operations carried out on that day, and also the day before, there was a long-running prevention operation already underway during the night, then in the morning and afternoon. Obviously, during these operations, we were also pelted with stones, to the extent that six officers were injured. Clearly, there were then responses from the police, proportionate to the incidents that occurred.’ This was the statement from Turin’s Chief of Police, Massimo Gambino, regarding the disturbances that broke out before the Turin derby, in which Juventus fan Marco Basoccu was seriously injured, on the sidelines of the press conference concerning the Memorandum of Understanding on cyber security between Piedmont, Valle d’Aosta and the University of Turin. Regarding contact between the two sets of supporters, Gambino clarified: “Contact was very limited, partly because it seems to me that, apart from this young man, unfortunately, and our six injured officers, there were no other instances where people were injured. So the police operations were carried out with the personnel we had available and, I repeat, services that had already been deployed the evening before.” Finally, regarding the allegations made by some ultras groups, according to which the 36-year-old was injured by a tear gas canister, the police chief stated that he could not comment, given that “investigations are still ongoing”.
