Vatican City (Vatican), 25 May (LaPresse) – “In the age of artificial intelligence, when human dignity risks being overshadowed by new forms of dehumanisation, we have an urgent duty to remain profoundly human, lovingly safeguarding that magnificent humanity which has been given to us and revealed in its fullness in Christ, and which no machine will ever be able to replace in its splendour. True progress always springs from a heart open to others, from an intelligence willing to listen, from a will that seeks what unites rather than what divides.” This is stated in ‘Magnifica humanitas’, the first Encyclical of Pope Leo XIV. The text, comprising five chapters and 245 points, was published this morning. “The Magnificent Humanity created by God now faces a decisive choice: to erect a new Tower of Babel or to build the city where God and humanity dwell together,” reads the opening of the encyclical. Every generation inherits the task of shaping its own time: of allowing history to mature as a place where the dignity of every person is safeguarded, justice promoted and fraternity made possible. But every age faces the risk of building an inhuman and more unjust world. Where humanity is in danger of losing its true identity, we Christians lift our eyes to the God who became flesh, knowing that ‘only in the mystery of the Incarnate Word does the mystery of man find true light’. This magnificent humanity in Jesus Christ becomes the Way, the Truth and the Life, opening the path for each of us to grow towards fulfilment."
