Trento, 12 May (LaPresse) – The Trento Public Prosecutor’s Office has requested that the case be dropped. The investigation, involving three suspects, concerned an alleged “mafia-style criminal organisation linked to the death of Marco Pantani”. After more than a year of investigations and having interviewed over 70 people with knowledge of the facts, the Anti-Mafia Directorate’s public prosecutor, Patrizia Foiera, has put 150 pages of minutes in writing, highlighting, as LaPresse has learnt, that “in order to identify those responsible and attribute liability, according to the reasonable prospect of a conviction – which is also conditioned by the time that has elapsed – there has been no logical or evidential corroboration of the statements made at the time”. Under the scrutiny of the prosecution, the shadow of the Camorra looms, which is alleged to have intervened to prevent the champion from Romagna from winning the 1999 Giro d’Italia. “The request for the case to be dismissed is made not without noting that the long time that has elapsed and the passing of key figures from that era have undoubtedly worked against the investigation, as they could have shed light on this new line of inquiry.” As reported by LaPresse, the public prosecutor of the Trento Anti-Mafia Directorate, Patrizia Foiera, has requested the case be dismissed regarding the investigation, involving three suspects, into the alleged “mafia-style criminal association linked to the death of Marco Pantani”.
