Milan, 7 May (LaPresse/AP) – The Russian Ministry of Defence has reported that overnight, air defences shot down 347 Ukrainian drones across more than 20 Russian regions, including the Moscow region. It is Ukraine’s second-largest aerial assault since the war began in February 2022, following the one last March in which 389 drones were launched. The attack comes on the eve of Victory Day celebrations in Russia, marking the defeat of Nazi Germany in the Second World War. To mark the occasion, the Russian authorities had declared a unilateral ceasefire with Ukraine for Friday and Saturday, to which Kyiv responded, in turn, by announcing a ceasefire from midnight Ukrainian time on Wednesday. In his evening address yesterday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that “Russia has not ceased any military activity”, and therefore “Ukraine will respond in kind”.
