Iran: South Korea to consider participation in Project Freedom

Frankfurt (Germany), 5 May (LaPresse) – South Korea has stated that it will “review its position” regarding participation in US operations in the Strait of Hormuz, after US President Donald Trump urged Seoul to take part in what he termed ‘Project Freedom’, following an apparent Iranian attack on one of its ships. This was reported by the South Korean news agency Newsis. On Monday, an explosion and fire occurred on board a South Korean merchant ship in the Strait of Hormuz. The South Korean Foreign Ministry stated that all 24 crew members on board the HMM Namu, including six South Korean nationals, were unharmed and that the fire on board had been “completely extinguished”. The South Korean Ministry of Defence stated that it would “carefully review its position” regarding the situation in Hormuz, without, however, committing to changing it. The ministry stated that Seoul would assess its position based on international law, the security of international shipping lanes, its alliance with the United States and the security situation on the Korean Peninsula. It also added that it had “actively participated in international discussions on cooperation to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz”.
