Brussels, 25 March (LaPresse) – The French city of Lille has won the EU bid to host the new headquarters of the European Customs Authority (EUCA), beating the other finalist, Rome. The decisive vote among representatives of the EU Council and the European Parliament took place in the third round, when a lower quorum was required: a two-thirds majority was sufficient, i.e. at least 36 votes out of 54, rather than a three-quarters majority (41 votes). The candidate cities were: Liège (Belgium), Zagreb (Croatia), Lille (France), Rome (Italy), The Hague (Netherlands), Warsaw (Poland), Porto (Portugal), Bucharest (Romania) and Málaga (Spain). The new agency is expected to employ around 250 European officials tasked with overseeing imports of all products.
