Iran, Red Crescent Tehran: ‘Possible acid rain, stay indoors’

Milan, 8 March (LaPresse) – The Red Crescent has announced that the release of toxic compounds into the atmosphere following the explosion at the oil depot in Tehran could cause dangerous acid rain in the event of precipitation. This was reported by the Mehr news agency. "Following the explosion and fire at the oil depots, a significant volume of toxic compounds, including hydrocarbons, sulphur oxides and nitrogen oxides, was released into the atmosphere. These substances can combine with water vapour in the clouds and, in the event of rainfall, create highly corrosive acid rain,‘ explained the Red Crescent, indicating that ’direct contact with this type of rain can cause burns, irritation and skin damage, while inhalation can cause respiratory problems". The recommendation when it rains after a hydrocarbon explosion is to ‘stay indoors under all circumstances and cover all openings with a damp cloth’.
