L'Ile Longue (France), 2 March (LaPresse/AP) – President Emmanuel Macron has announced that France will increase the number of its nuclear warheads from the current level of less than 300. This will be the first time France has increased its nuclear arsenal since at least 1992. Macron did not provide a precise figure. ‘I have decided to increase the number of warheads in our arsenal,’ he said at a military base in L'Ile Longue, in north-western France, which houses the country's ballistic missile submarines. Macron's speech aims to clarify the role of French nuclear weapons in European security, amid concerns raised on the continent by recurring tensions with US President Donald Trump.
