Rome, 27 February (LaPresse) – US Vice President JD Vance said in an interview with the Washington Post that although President Donald Trump is still considering the possibility of a military strike against Iran, it is ‘impossible’ that such an attack could involve the US in a long and protracted war. Vance admitted that he does not know what decision Trump will make regarding Iran, describing some possibilities that include military strikes ‘to ensure that Iran does not obtain nuclear weapons’ or the resolution ‘of the problem through diplomatic means.’ But if Trump were to proceed with another series of attacks against Iran – which some US officials believe could be more extensive than the bombing of nuclear sites in June – Vance confidently stated that it would not turn into a long conflict. ‘There is no chance of that happening,’ said the deputy chief of staff, referring to ‘the idea that we will be involved in a war in the Middle East for years with no end in sight.’ Vance also said he still considers himself a ‘sceptic of military intervention abroad,’ a description he believes continues to apply to Trump. ‘I think we all prefer the diplomatic option,’ he said, ‘but it really depends on what the Iranians do and say.’
