Milan, 5 February (LaPresse) – ‘When the rule of power replaces the power of law, the consequences are deeply destabilising.’ This is what UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in an interview with the daily newspaper La Repubblica. ‘If we want a stable world – one in which peace can be sustained, shared development and our common values can prevail – we must support multipolarity rooted in cooperation, not confrontation,’ he added. "Impunity fuels conflict, escalation and amplifies mistrust, allowing spoilers to exploit tensions and act without accountability. Multilateral cooperation is weakened and international institutions struggle to respond effectively to crises. When powerful states prioritise influence over adherence to international law, the credibility of the rules-based international system is undermined, sending a dangerous message that rules and norms can be ignored and discarded. This erodes trust between countries, encourages unilateral action and increases the risk of confrontation, instability and human suffering."
