USA, former UK ambassador Mandelson to leave House of Lords over Epstein scandal

London (United Kingdom), Feb. 3 (LaPresse) – British politician and former ambassador to the United States Peter Mandelson will leave the House of Lords due to new revelations about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. The Lord Speaker reported that Mandelson announced he will resign from the upper chamber of Parliament starting tomorrow. Mandelson also faces a possible police investigation for having passed confidential government information to the late sexual abuser. The British government has in fact sent the police a file containing material related to allegations that Mandelson passed confidential government information to Epstein. Investigators are assessing whether Mandelson should be subjected to a criminal investigation for leaks to the late sexual abuser. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer told his cabinet he was “shocked” by the revelations contained in the Epstein files recently made public and concerned that further details could emerge. Starmer’s spokesperson, Tom Wells, said the government had sent the police its assessment, according to which the Mandelson-Epstein documents contained “market-sensitive information” on the 2008 global financial crisis and its aftermath, which should not have been shared outside government.
