Cairo (Egypt), 1 February (LaPresse/AP) – Israel has announced that the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Israel reopened today for testing and that crossings to and from the Strip for Gaza residents will begin on Monday. This was reported by COGAT, the Israeli military agency that controls aid to Gaza. The reopening of the border crossing, a key step in the continuation of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, was expected today. The reopening is a crucial step as the US-brokered ceasefire agreement last year, which came into effect on 10 October, enters its second phase. Yesterday, at least 30 Palestinians, including several children, were killed in Israeli raids on Gaza, according to hospital sources. Rafah, which Palestinians consider their gateway to the world, has been largely closed since it was taken by Israel in May 2024.
