Washington (USA), 30 January. (LaPresse) – Luigi Mangione, if convicted of the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024, will not face the death penalty. This was ruled by Federal Judge Margaret Garnett, marking a defeat for federal prosecutors, who had been adamant in seeking capital punishment in this case. The judge also ruled that evidence found in Mangione's backpack at the time of his arrest will be admissible at trial. Police seized several items from Mangione's backpack, including a gun, a full magazine and a red notebook: key items that, according to authorities, link him to the murder. Mangione's lawyers had requested that this evidence be excluded from the trial, arguing that the search of their client's rucksack was illegal as a warrant had not yet been obtained and there was no immediate threat that would justify a search without a warrant.
