Washington (USA), Jan. 22 (LaPresse) – Encouraged by the ousting of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by the United States, the Trump administration is seeking members of the Cuban government who could help cut a deal to overthrow the communist regime by the end of the year, according to the Wall Street Journal. U.S. officials believe Cuba’s economy is close to collapse and that the government has never been so fragile after losing a crucial benefactor in Venezuela. The administration does not yet have a concrete plan to end the Communist government that has ruled the Caribbean island for nearly seven decades, but senior U.S. officials see Maduro’s capture and subsequent concessions from his remaining allies as both a model and a warning for Cuba. President Trump has publicly urged Cuban leaders to “make a deal before it’s too late,” warning that “no more oil or money” will be allowed to reach the island. The effort aims to identify insiders within the Cuban regime who might be willing to negotiate its end, but no formal blueprint has been announced. Cuba’s leadership, including President Miguel Díaz‑Canel, has rejected any political concessions and reaffirmed its resistance to U.S. pressure.
