Milan, 19 Jan. (LaPresse) – Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has announced that she intends to dissolve Parliament on Friday, the opening day of this year's ordinary session, in order to call early elections. This was reported by the local press. Speaking at a press conference, Takaichi said she would put her position on the line and ask voters to decide whether she should remain at the helm of the government. According to reports from leading members of the ruling parties, the elections are expected to be held on 8 February, with the election campaign beginning on 27 January. These will be the first elections since Takaichi became Japan's first female prime minister three months ago, on 21 October. In the elections, Takaichi hopes to capitalise on her government's high approval ratings to win more seats and strengthen her mandate.
