Dubai (United Arab Emirates), 14 January (LaPresse/AP) – The death toll in protests in Iran rose to at least 2,571 in the early hours of today, according to the US news agency Human Rights Activists News Agency. This figure far exceeds the death toll from any other series of protests or unrest in Iran in recent decades and is reminiscent of the chaos that surrounded the 1979 Islamic revolution. Iranian state television offered the first official acknowledgement of the victims, quoting an official who said the country had suffered “many martyrs”. The activist group specified that 2,403 of the dead were protesters and 147 were affiliated with the government. Twelve children were killed, along with nine civilians who, according to the group, were not participating in the protests. More than 18,100 people were arrested.
