Milan, 13 January (LaPresse) – The ongoing demonstrations in Iran are “unprecedented” and ‘seem to be the most serious in decades’. This was stated in an interview with La Repubblica by David Petraeus, former director of the CIA. ‘This does not mean that there is a clear prospect for the fall of the regime, especially since there does not seem to be an organisation behind it,’ and ‘they reflect the unprecedented failure of the Iranian state.’ "In recent times, there has also been an extraordinary deterioration in Iran's defensive capabilities, the loss of allies such as Assad in Syria and proxies operating throughout the region on its behalf. Tehran has reached one of the lowest points in its history. It has some of the largest reserves of oil and gas, but it cannot even provide electricity to its citizens. The people are tired and are raising their voices,‘ he says. Petraeus believes it is ’difficult" that a targeted attack could bring about the fall of the regime.
