Dubai (United Arab Emirates), 13 Jan. (LaPresse/AP) – Today, Iranians were able to make international calls on their mobile phones for the first time since communications were cut off in the country during the crackdown on nationwide protests in which, according to activists, at least 646 people were killed. Several people in Tehran managed to call the Associated Press and speak to a reporter. The AP office in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, was unable to call back those numbers. Witnesses reported that text messaging service was still down and that Internet connection was possible to locally approved government websites, but not to foreign ones. Witnesses provided a brief account of life on the streets of the Iranian capital during the four and a half days of isolation from the rest of the world. They described a heavy security presence in central Tehran.
