Washington (USA), Jan 12 (LaPresse) – The United States Department of Justice has opened an investigation against Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell as part of an inquiry into the restructuring of Fed buildings, a $2.5 billion project that this summer US President Donald Trump called excessive. Reports the New York Times. “It is a matter of establishing whether the Fed will be able to continue setting interest rates based on economic conditions, or whether monetary policy will instead be guided by political pressure or intimidation,” Powell said in a video message, according to which the threat of criminal indictment is a “pretext” to undermine the Fed’s independence in setting interest rates.
