Dubai (United Arab Emirates), Jan. 12 (LaPresse) – Tens of thousands of pro-government demonstrators took to the streets in Iran, responding to a call by the authorities after the massive anti-government protests of recent days. Iranian state TV showed images of demonstrators crowding Tehran toward Enghelab Square and described the march as an "Iranian uprising against American-Zionist terrorism". The broadcaster aired footage of pro-government demonstrations across the country, a show of force aimed at signaling that the country would overcome the anti-government protests of recent days. No reference was made to popular anger over the country’s difficult economic situation, which was the trigger for the start of the protests on Dec. 28. Today Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, speaking at a meeting with foreign diplomats, said that "the situation is now under total control", announcing that the internet will soon be restored.
