This was stated by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen following the EU Member States' green light for the trade agreement with Mercosur. "Just three weeks ago, at the European Council, we assured our Mercosur partners that we would come to them and that together we would make history. During this period, we have worked hard with our Member States and stakeholders to achieve our goals. Today, this hard work has paid off and I welcome the Council's decision, which allows us to move forward. I look forward to signing this historic agreement soon under the Paraguayan Presidency, which has just begun, thanks to the strong leadership and fruitful collaboration of President Lula," she added. ‘After 25 years of work, we have reached a substantial and mutually beneficial agreement that will increase prosperity and create incredible opportunities. This agreement marks a new era of trade and cooperation with our Mercosur partners. But it is also a testament to the resilience and strength of our relations with Latin America, and an alliance that will bring us even closer together,’ von der Leyen emphasised.
