Milan, 6 January (LaPresse) – ‘Trump has made it crystal clear that his only goal is Venezuelan oil. He is not interested in Maria Corina Machado or democracy, but wants to work with Maduro's deputy Delcy Rodríguez and what remains of the regime to gain access to the country's resources.’ This is what American political scientist Francis Fukuyama said in an interview with La Repubblica. ‘Now the real question is whether Rodríguez will have the strength to subjugate the armed forces and criminal gangs that rule Venezuela to Trump's will,’ he said. According to Fukuyama, Trump ‘wants to rely on a completely illegitimate government,’ but is making ‘a big mistake in his political assessment because the problem with Venezuela was the regime, not Maduro.’ ‘The underlying problem was and remains the regime. Trump thinks he can manipulate it, still threatening the use of force, to get a few more contracts for Chevron or other American oil companies, but in doing so he is collaborating with criminals. It's terrible, this is pure imperialism from disastrous eras buried in the past,’ he emphasises.
