Frankfurt (Germany), Dec. 19 (LaPresse) – “Support for Ukraine is not charity: it is an investment in the security of the European Union.” This was stated in an interview with LaPresse by Oleksandra Matvijcuk, leader of the Center for Civil Liberties, Nobel Peace Prize winner for 2022, commenting on the European debate on military aid to Kiev. According to Matvijcuk, Ukraine now plays a crucial role in defending the continent: “If Russian drones are not arriving in large numbers in Rome, Berlin, or Warsaw, it is because they are being intercepted in Ukraine. We are stopping a threat that affects all of Europe.” The Nobel laureate drew attention to the internal political divisions within European countries: “I understand that many European societies have never had to pay the price of security with their lives, but these are times when leaders must tell the truth to their citizens: the old status quo no longer exists.” Finally, Matviychuk clarified what she means by ‘just peace’: "We want peace more than anyone else, but we do not want Russian occupation. Occupation does not reduce human suffering, it only makes it invisible. It means torture, enforced disappearances, rape, deportation of children, and mass graves.“ ”Peace cannot be a pause to allow Russia to reorganize and strike again,“ he concluded. ”Peace must be sustainable, otherwise it is only the beginning of the next war."
