Berlin (Germany), 15 Dec. (LaPresse/AP) – Following Sunday's talks in Berlin between US envoys and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukrainian officials and European heads of state and government, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, as well as EU and NATO leaders, are ready to continue a series of meetings in an attempt to secure a path to peace and security for Ukraine and Europe. On Sunday, Zelensky met with US President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, at the German Federal Chancellery. The search for possible compromises has encountered significant obstacles, including control of the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk, which is mostly occupied by Russian forces. Zelensky said on Sunday that he was prepared to drop his country's request to join NATO if the United States and other Western nations provided Kiev with security guarantees similar to those offered to Alliance members. However, Ukraine continued to reject the United States' request to cede territory to Russia.
