Paris (France), 15 December (LaPresse/AP) – Louvre museum workers voted today in favour of a strike to protest against working conditions. The CFDT union reported that the vote was taken during a meeting of 400 workers this morning and that it was decided to strike for the entire day. The museum did not open today. A notice on its website informs visitors that “the museum is closed for the time being”. The strike comes after the embarrassing theft of jewellery from the museum in broad daylight in October. In their strike notice to Culture Minister Rachida Dati last week, the CFDT, CGT and Sud unions said the Louvre was in ‘crisis’, with insufficient resources and ‘increasingly deteriorating working conditions’. The strike notice is indefinite, but the museum is usually closed on Tuesdays. The vote in favour of the strike followed talks last week between the unions and government officials, including Dati herself. Union leaders said the talks did not alleviate all their concerns about staffing and funding for the Louvre.
