Miami (Florida, US), Dec. 10 (LaPresse) – Eileen Higgins has become the first Democrat in nearly 30 years to be elected mayor of Miami. In the race she defeated the Trump-backed candidate, Emilio Gonzalez, a former manager. Higgins’ victory ended the nearly three-decade streak of her party’s defeats and gave a boost to the Democrats in one of the last electoral battles ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. “Tonight, the people of Miami made history,” she declared after the announcement of the results.
