Children, UNICEF: ‘14,000 attacks on schools in 20 years, 2 per day’

Milan, 30 November (LaPresse) – In 20 years, the United Nations has verified more than 14,000 attacks on schools in conflict zones: approximately two attacks per day over 20 years. This is according to UNICEF, which emphasises that more than half of these attacks – approximately 8,000 – have occurred in the last 10 years. In the Gaza Strip alone, 97% of schools have been damaged or destroyed since 2023. In Myanmar, Ukraine and the Democratic Republic of Congo, hundreds of schools have been looted, set on fire or hit by bombing. This year in Ukraine, more than 340 school facilities have been damaged or destroyed, bringing the total number of schools damaged or destroyed to 2,800 since the escalation of the war in February 2022. “Attacks on schools are a serious violation of children's rights. We must protect children and their right to study in safety,” UNICEF concludes.
