Frankfurt (Germany), 27 November (LaPresse) – Italy has extradited Ukrainian citizen Serhiy Kuznietzov to Germany on suspicion of sabotaging the Nord Stream gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea in 2022. The 49-year-old Ukrainian was handed over to the German police by the Italian authorities. This was confirmed to LaPresse by the spokesperson for the Federal Prosecutor's Office in Karlsruhe. "The defendant has arrived here in Karlsruhe and the hearing before the investigating judge of the Federal Court of Justice here in Karlsruhe will be held tomorrow morning. The investigating judge will first inform him of the arrest warrant and then decide whether to confirm his pre-trial detention," the spokeswoman explained, adding that the suspect is currently in custody. Kuznietzov spent most of his pre-trial detention in a maximum-security prison in Ferrara. He repeatedly tried to prevent his extradition by appealing to the Italian judiciary. At one point, he even went on hunger strike. Last week, however, the Italian Supreme Court gave final approval for his extradition. The suspect was transported to Germany by helicopter, accompanied by German officials. The Ukrainian will then stand trial in Germany. Hamburg is considered a possible venue.
