Rome, 27 Nov. (LaPresse) – France's goal is to have ‘10,000 young people recruited in 2030’ and then ‘50,000 young people in 2035’, a figure that will be ‘appropriate to the level of threat’. This was stated by French President Emmanuel Macron when announcing the establishment of a voluntary military service. The Élysée Palace specifies that volunteers engaged in ‘purely military’ national service will receive a minimum of €800 per month, plus board, lodging and equipment. Emmanuel Macron believes that compulsory national service, abolished in 1997, ‘does not meet the needs of our armed forces or our threats.’ ‘We cannot return to the days of compulsory conscription, but we need the nation to mobilise, not against an enemy, but to defend ourselves and be ready.’
