EU: new EPP-right-wing alliance in the European Parliament to postpone deforestation regulations

Brussels, 26 November (LaPresse) – New alliance between the Popular Party and the right wing in the European Parliament to curb the Green Deal regulations. Following the 13 November vote by the EPP together with the ECR and Patriots right-wing parties to simplify due diligence and environmental reporting requirements for companies, today saw a repeat of the new “majority” formula to approve the European Parliament's position on simplifying rules on deforestation products. Out of 660 voters, 402 voted in favour, 250 against and 8 abstained. In practice, following the adoption of the urgent procedure taken during the last plenary session, the Parliament's position on certain amendments proposed by the Commission to facilitate the implementation of the Deforestation Regulation by companies, global actors, non-EU countries and Member States was adopted. The regulation adopted by Parliament on 19 April 2023 aims to combat climate change and biodiversity loss by preventing deforestation linked to the consumption of cocoa, coffee, palm oil, soy, wood, rubber, charcoal, printed paper and cattle. In force since 29 June 2023, the provisions of the law will apply to large companies from 30 December 2025 and to micro and small companies from 30 June 2026 (following a decision taken in 2024 to postpone these dates by one year).
