Middle East: UN reports 206 attacks by settlers in October, the highest number since 2006

Khan Younis (Gaza Strip), 14 Nov. (LaPresse/AP) – United Nations human rights chief Volker Türk has joined the chorus of condemnation of the recent series of attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank, urging an end to the violence and calling on Israel to ensure that those responsible are held accountable for their actions. The spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Thameen Al-Kheetan, said that Türk also called on Israel to end its ‘illegal presence in the occupied Palestinian territories,’ to immediately cease all new settlement activities and to evacuate all settlers. Al-Kheetan added that more than 206 attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians were recorded in October, more than in any other month since 2006. ‘We reiterate that the Israeli government's assertion of sovereignty over the occupied West Bank and its annexation of parts of it violate international law, as confirmed by the International Court of Justice,’ Al-Kheetan stressed.
