The European Democracy Shield will strengthen the fundamental elements that enable citizens to live our common democratic values every day: freedom of speech, independent media, resilient institutions and a dynamic civil society. This is Europe's strength, and we must increase our collective capacity to protect it at all times." This was stated by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, commenting on the European Democracy Shield and the strategy for civil society.
