Ecuador: clashes in prison, at least 31 dead

Rome, 10 November (LaPresse) – At least 31 people have died in clashes at Machala prison in the southern region of El Oro, Ecuador. This was reported by the South American country's government, as quoted by Spanish television station Rtve. Most of the victims (27) are believed to have died from asphyxiation. The tragedy comes at the end of a day of violence, characterised by clashes involving firearms and explosives inside the prison. Thirty-three inmates and one police officer were injured, and seven people were arrested.
