Milan, 23 October (LaPresse) – The Trump administration is considering requesting a mandate from the United Nations to send an international security force to Gaza. This was stated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews before leaving for Israel, according to the New York Times. It is “important” that the United States help “maintain the ceasefire”, Rubio said. The truce is based on a proposal outlined by President Trump in September, which also included a ‘temporary international stabilisation force’ in Gaza. The idea was that such a force would ensure the security of areas from which Israeli troops had withdrawn, prevent ammunition from entering the territory, facilitate the distribution of aid and train a Palestinian police force. but several countries have been reluctant to contribute soldiers to this force because its exact mission in the Strip is unclear and because they fear it could lead to direct conflict with Hamas fighters. ‘Potentially turning to the UN and obtaining an international mandate’ is a step towards ‘the establishment of international security forces,’ Rubio said.
