Brussels, Oct 17 (LaPresse) – “Intimidation and harassment against journalists have no place in Europe. We have seen the reports and condemn such attacks against journalists and their families. We know that an investigation is ongoing. Journalists must be able to carry out their fundamental work safely, free from threats and assaults. We have made the protection of journalists one of our main objectives.” This was stated by European Commission spokesperson Marcus Lemmert, commenting on the news of the attack on Sigfrido Ranucci, during the daily press briefing. “We have made the protection of journalists one of the key elements of the European media freedom law and have also issued a recommendation on journalists’ safety, which since 2021 ensures their freedom to work freely anywhere in the European Union. This is at the heart of media freedom and our democracy,” he added.
