Milan, 10 October (LaPresse) – ‘I'm in shock.’ This was the reaction of Maria Corina Machado, an opposition politician in Venezuela, to the news that she had been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize. Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, who claimed victory in the last presidential elections in Venezuela against current President Nicolas Maduro, posted a video on X in which he is seen talking on the phone on speakerphone: ‘I'm in shock,’ says Machado on the other end of the line, ‘I can't believe it.’ Maria Corina Machado was prevented from running in the 28 July 2024 presidential election, but she threw her support behind former diplomat Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia as the candidate of an unusually united opposition.
